After a Winter Hibernation Our First Search and Rescue Class Was a Great Success

February 25th to March 1st was such a wonderful experience and quite a milestone for Argus Rising. We held our very first class under the new leadership of Kim and Joey Edwards. Our fabulous students were from Brownsburg Indiana, Hurst, Keller and Springtown Texas. Not only do we thank our students but, also the BARA Church in Trophy Club Texas for their wonderful hospitality.

Here is a summary of the 5 day class:

Monday was a classroom day. We covered the basics of what Search and Rescue is. This included SAR search techniques, terminology, UAV SAR flight patterns and SAR scenarios.

Tuesday was a flight day. We flew several mock missions focusing on team formation, roles and communication.

Wednesday was classroom day 2. This was the day that we discussed different UAV platforms and their capabilities. We went over specific flight and safety apps and delved into the world of thermal imaging.

Thursday was flight day 2. It was VERY cold that day. We setup a small weather resistant basecamp and proceeded to fly multiple missions both free flight and pre-programmed.

Friday was certification day. Our day began indoors where we reviewed the information and then took the final exam. Then it was every pilot for themselves as they were assigned a site and mission to fly solo. Our rendezvous point was where we enjoyed our last lunch of the week together then gathered at the Roanoke City Hall for certification photos.

We couldn't have been happier with the way this class went. We faced many obstacles both technical and manmade. But, together we persevered and made it a wonderful learning experience for all involved.
